One Fateful Halloween NightWe aren't sure what it was that brought a last minute cowgirl and a baby powder grandpa together at a Halloween party all those years ago, but we're so glad it did! It's been an exciting roller coaster through life together ever since and we can't wait to see what the future holds.

Sarah Says: It really is true that things in life sometimes come to you when you least expect them. Mike and my meeting fits this to a T. We met our Junior year of college at a Halloween party at a friend's place. I hadn’t put much thought into the evening, lacking even any sort of costume so I threw on a plaid shirt and called myself a cowgirl! Upon getting to our friend's apartment, I spotted this guy standing across the room with a dusting of baby powder on his shoulders, sprinkled down from his "grey hair", the perfect complement to his grandpa costume. There was just something about him - the fun and excitement he brought to the party, his free spirit and bright energy - that made me want to get to know him better. We said hello and the evening was a perfect mix of enjoying the company of our friends, one another, and a man in a chicken costume, whom we lovingly dubbed Chicken... a highlight we still all laugh about to this day.
A couple months passed and Mike and I hadn't seen each other since the feathers settled, and I was still thinking about him so I worked up the courage to get him phone number and reach out. I think we’ll take this controversy to the grave, but I swear Mike’s response to my message was “Sarah who?”, and he maintains his answer was crafted a bit more carefully. Regardless, he connected the mental dots quickly, placed who was on the sending end of the text. We made plans to hang out a couple days later, and sitting together watching a movie, I felt the same connection as I had months earlier when we first met - he was a pretty cool guy! With a rotation of films on in the background, we talked for hours about anything and everything, enjoying each other’s company and laughter. From then on, Mike and I have been so lucky to be able to build our relationship together to what it is today. Having the each other as partners while we finished school and ventured into life as “real” adults was an exciting journey. From cooking classes to gardening, trying our hand at ballroom dancing and the ever exciting impromptu adventure, there’s certainly never a dull moment and we love spending time with each other. I’ve never met someone else who is as supportive and caring, motivational and inspiring as Mike. Ever able to make me laugh, Mike is a true light in my life. He will forever be the silly to my serious, the punny to my practical, and the eccentric to my extra-orderly. I love that we push each other to truly be better versions of ourselves, that we can always lean on each other to puzzle through challenges big and small. It seriously is something special when the mere sight of another person is able to bring a smile to your face. I can't wait for us to continue on this journey together and grow as individuals and as a couple. I am so excited for us to bring our friends and our families together from every season of our lives to share in celebrating this important moment with us. As we venture into this new story in our road together, I am so grateful that I get to travel through life with someone as wonderful as Mike. |
Michael Says: There is something to be said about friends that you can always rely on. I am fortunate to have moved to Boston for college and have some of my best friends living a few blocks away. This is what led me to that Halloween party where I would meet two amazing individuals who made that Halloween the best one ever. The first was a husky gentleman dressed in a perfect chicken costume. The second, a cowgirl, turned out to be the love of my life and person I cannot wait to marry. While I did not keep in contact with either of them in the weeks to follow, I most certainly had great memories and a desire to connect with both in the future. Fortunately for me one of them reached out and sparked a conversation that has continued for the last 6 years (hint, it wasn’t Chicken).
Sarah will be the first one to point out that it was she who reached out and who made the first move, but the truth is, I couldn’t be happier that it worked out this way. Sarah had reached out toward the end of the fall semester as we were wrapping up with finals for the year. As she recalls, my reply read simply “Sarah Who?” and I will take it to my grave that I was much more delicate and apologetic for not recalling who Sarah was. While the sentiment might have been the same, I was not quite as curt as she will have everyone believe, I remember the first time we hung out one on one was the day of my last final for the year. The following day, we went to the MFA together and my interesting strategy as we perused the galleries had Sarah questioning whether or not I was truly interested in the artwork or in her (Thanks Hitch for the advice). Over the next several weeks we began to get to know one another quite well and developed a great friendship. There was a connection that blossomed and continues to grow to this day. We have spent 6 years in one another’s lives and each day is an adventure. From learning and experimenting in the kitchen, the dance floor, and as interior designers of our apartment to lazy board games nights, couch nests, and movie nights, we have been able to build our relationship and partnership on spending time a million moments together and brightening the day of the other. From that first night together, it was very clear to me that this woman is someone with drive and passion. It drew me in and we spoke passionately about what we do and shared our life experiences with one another. We talked and talked for hours about what interests us, what drives and motivates us, and we laughed and laughed and laughed. We continue to push and motivate one another and share in some of the best laughs you can imagine. We will always be a goofy pair but it is so fitting for whom each of us are as individuals. It’s only right that it continues in our life as a couple. Sarah is nothing if not consistent and is always the rock that I need to help guide or stabilize my life and is always the first to bring a big smile to my face. I cannot wait to embark on our next adventure and there is no one on earth who I would rather be doing it with. Marriage will be our best adventure yet and I am beyond excited that you, our friends, get to join us as we embark on it together. We will have a million and one additional moments in our life but I know our wedding day will be the one to stick out of the crowd. As I always say, every day is an adventure. I know this one will be the best one yet and there is no one I would rather have by my side than Sarah. |
